Election Day in Fort Collins: Ballots Are Due by 7 p.m. Tuesday — and Postmarks Do Not Count (Fort Collins Choice City News)

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, and Fort Collins voters still holding a ballot have one deadline that matters above all others: ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Colorado votes mostly by mail — every active registered voter was mailed a ballot — but a postmark does not count. A ballot dropped in a mailbox on Tuesday that arrives after 7 p.m. will not be counted, which is why election officials steer late voters to drop boxes and in-person centers instead.

Larimer County runs Fort Collins' election operation, including its Voter Service and Polling Centers, known as VSPCs. Voters can return a completed ballot by drop box or in person at a VSPC, replace a spoiled or missing ballot there, register, and vote in person. VSPCs are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, and anyone in line by 7 p.m. may vote — so joining the line before the hour matters more than finishing before it.

Voting in person requires an ID. Colorado accepts many forms of identification, including a driver's license, a state ID, and a U.S. passport, along with certain non-photo IDs on the Secretary of State's list. Voters who are unsure whether what is in their wallet qualifies can check the list before they go, rather than making a second trip on a busy day.

Same-day registration is available at a VSPC through Election Day, which means a Fort Collins resident who has not registered, or who needs to update an address, can still take care of it and vote on Tuesday. That safety net is a defining feature of Colorado elections, and it is built for exactly the voter who realizes at the last minute that something about their registration is out of date.

After returning a ballot, voters can track it at GoVoteColorado.gov through BallotTrax, which follows the ballot through the process. Fort Collins Choice City News will follow Larimer County's results reporting after polls close Tuesday, and this desk's advice tonight is simple: if your ballot is still at home, do not mail it — take it to a drop box or a VSPC and get it in well before 7 p.m.
