Canvas Stadium Changed What a Rams Game Day Feels Like in Fort Collins (Fort Collins Choice City News)

For nearly half a century, Colorado State Rams football was played west of town at Hughes Stadium. Since 2017 it has been played where it started: on campus, at what is now Canvas Stadium, officially Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium. The move did more than shorten a trip. It folded game day back into the life of the university and the city around it — into Old Town mornings, campus tailgates and the walk-up crowd on game day.

The stadium, owned and operated by Colorado State University, seats tens of thousands and sits at the western edge of the main campus, a short distance from Moby Arena. Its arrival reshaped the surrounding blocks: West Elizabeth and the campus corridors now carry the pregame and postgame crowds that once gathered miles away, and businesses from downtown to Campus West plan their Saturdays around the home schedule.

Game day in Fort Collins is a logistics exercise the city has learned by repetition. Traffic builds on the corridors feeding campus, transit and bicycles take a visible share of the load, and the neighborhoods around the university absorb a small city's worth of visitors for a few hours. Residents who do not attend plan around it; those who do would not trade it.

No result belongs in a launch-day story, and none is offered here — this desk will report Rams football game by game as it is played, with scores earned on the field rather than anticipated in print. What can be said in advance is structural: a competitive program, a modern on-campus stadium and a fan base that treats the Border War and conference play as civic occasions.

Fort Collins Choice City News launches its sports desk with a simple commitment: cover the Rams the way the city experiences them — as the hometown team, in a stadium you can walk to, in a town that organizes its autumn Saturdays around them. We will see you at Canvas.
